NEW YEAR’S SEX RESOLUTIONS TO KICK OFF THE YEAR WITH A BANG

It’s that time when the New Year is strolling in with sparkling anticipation, and the old year is still lingering like the last guy at the Lynyrd Skynyrd concert: shirt half open, holding a warm Michelob, refusing to admit it’s over. It’s also that time when we make promises to lose a few pounds, eat “better,” exercise more, declutter the garage, you know the drill.

This year, how about resolutions that actually make us smile and are fun to keep? How about making some Sex Resolutions?

Sex resolutions work just like regular resolutions, only you’ll want to check them off your list: you reflect on what’s been happening, what you’d like to explore, and create space for more pleasure, connection, confidence, and yes, more orgasms. Sex resolutions also remind us that sexual wellness isn’t an afterthought, but part of our overall well-being, right alongside sleep, movement, and laughter.

Sex resolutions are for partnered and solo folks. They’re about tuning into what feels good, exploring new sensations, and developing a kinder, more curious relationship with your sexuality. If you’re partnered, sex resolutions can open the door to better communication and deeper intimacy, if you’re solo, it’s about communicating with yourself.

Solo or coupled, big changes or even small tweaks can lead to a new world of pleasure and joy. So, whether you’ve already got your pen in hand and are on to the second page, or need some ideas, here are just a few sex resolutions to help you kick off the New Year with a bang!

1.        SEX IN NEW LOCATIONS (GET OUT OF THE BEDROOM!)

A change of scenery can bring a sense of novelty and excitement to your sexual adventures. Step away from the bedroom and try the living room, a comfy chair, a soft rug with pillows, or a private patio (with an emphasis on private). Sometimes simply moving to a different location shifts the energy. Suddenly things feel new, playful, and unexpected. Same body, same partner (or not, you can do this solo after all), but sex feels adventurous instead of routine.

2.        SEX AT 3 PM

Our sex hormones as we get older can feel a bit like a roller coaster ride. Up, down, and sometimes missing entirely. Research suggests that around 3 PM can be a hormonal sweet spot: women often have more energy, and men may feel more emotionally connected. Late-night sex used to sound romantic but so did waterbeds. Guess what things change. Now, many of us are in pajamas by 9 and asleep by 9:07 (and long age traded in our waterbeds because they’re impossible to get out of).

Make a New Year’s resolution of lunch, nap, and a 3 PM sex date. That’s a schedule worth keeping.

If you’re retired, it’s your lucky day in more way than one; if you’re not, don’t forget you have the weekend afternoons.

3.        EXPERIMENT WITH DIFFERENT LUBES

Getting older means less estrogen and a drier vagina, so using lubrication is essential for solo and partnered sex. Lube brings back comfort and ease, plus creates new sensations. If you have a penis you’ll enjoy the slickness of the lube as a helping hand.

Make a resolution to try different high-quality lubes, including warming and cooling lubes, and take note what feels best. A good lube can bring greater arousal and more satisfying orgasms.

4.        EXPLORE A KINK OR LONG-HELD FANTASY

No need for latex bodysuits and dungeon décor (unless that’s your thing). But maybe there’s a fantasy you’ve quietly carried for years — a little role play in a French maid costume, a blindfold, chocolate and whipped cream in creative places. Fantasies are personal and unique turn-ons. As long as it’s safe and your partner is willing (and remember, a partner is not needed), 2026 is the year to make your fantasy happen.

5.        BUY (AND WEAR) SEXY LINGERIE OR BRIEFS

Be honest, when was the last time you bought nice underwear. Was Johnny Carson still on TV? Are you wearing big cotton panties or boxers with stretched out elastic? (It’s ok, everyone has them, but not every day should be casual day when it comes to your underwear.)

Make a resolution to treat yourself to something with soft lace, silky briefs, colors besides white, and yes, comfortable. Sexy underwear is about how you feel. Wearing sexy underwear gives you confidence and puts a bounce in your step all day.

6.        FAITHFULLY DO YOUR KEGELS

Yes, Kegels again.

Kegels are tiny exercises with big benefits. For women, they tighten vaginal muscles, increase lubrication (but you still need lube, see above), and strengthen orgasms. For men, Kegels strengthen erections and heighten orgasmic intensity. Importantly, Kegels also improve bladder and bowel control for everyone. (Who doesn’t want that?)

Three minutes a day is all it takes. Consider it strength training for your pleasure muscles.

7.        GET A SEX TOY (OR TWO)

Older bodies take longer to get aroused and reaching orgasm can be challenging. A well-placed vibrator or sex toy could be the difference between an orgasm and not. (It isn’t Christmas anymore, but you can still get inspiration from my 12 Days of Sex Toys post here.) Vibrators, sucking toys, strokers, there’s truly something to please everybody.  Make this new year the year you invite a little technology into your sexual pleasure.

8.        AIM FOR A WEEKLY ORGASM

Are you part of the 41% of Older Adults that are having sex at least once a week? If not, get out that pen, and put it on your list of resolutions!

Solo or partnered, orgasms boost mood, glowing skin, sleep, and overall well-being. Regular orgasms also increase your libido and the desire for more orgasms.

In this new year, prioritize your sexual well-being and schedule pleasure just like you would any other important appointment. Put “The Big O” on your calendar, seriously. Aim for an orgasm a week, and if you go over your goal, CELEBRATE!

This is by no means the only Sex Resolutions you can make, and I’d love to hear any of your more creative ones. Here’s to a sexy, satisfying, and deliciously orgasmic 2026!
