Remember when you were young and couldn't wait for summer vacation? Carefree days of sunshine, swimsuits, backyard barbecues, and road trips in the family station wagon. Back then, the most exciting thing in your suitcase was a new pair of flip-flops.
Times change.
You may still count down to vacation, but now with a twist: travel and sex go together. Getting away is a proven libido booster, and vacation sex has a reputation for being hotter, better, and more memorable. That's not just wishful thinking. In a study by Sandals Resorts, a whopping 73% of traveling couples said their intimate time was more satisfying on vacation than at home. A survey by sex toy brand LELO found that more than half of participants said the best sex of their lives happened on vacation.
Why? New environments invite new exploration. For couples, a getaway is the perfect excuse to break out of your sexual routine (dare I say rut?) and try something new together. For solo play, vacation offers what home rarely does: No grandkids knocking on the bedroom door. No dog scratching to come in. No Amazon delivery ringing the bell just as things are getting interesting. A new place, new energy, and a relaxed body all set the stage to focus on your pleasure and get adventurous.
With all that potential passion brewing, do you know how to travel as your best, most sex-prepared self? The tips below cover what to pack, how to pack it, and what to leave at home, so you glide through airport security without a TSA agent asking over the loudspeaker, “Whose fluorescent purple rabbit is this?” And if you're cruising, these tips will keep you out of the ship's "naughty room." (Yes, that's a real thing on most ships. More on that later.)
And gentlemen, don’t tune out. Everything here applies to penis pumps, sleeves, rings, and other travel companions, too.
Travel by Air
If you're thinking about flying with your adult toys, you're not alone, and yes, it's allowed. Under TSA rules, flying with sex toys in the U.S. is generally permitted. Whether yours breezes through the checkpoint, though, is up to the officer handling your bag. Here's how to help them help you.
Carry-On vs. Checked
Where to pack your toys depends on what you're bringing, how it's powered, and how badly you'd like to avoid a chat with a TSA agent. Anything that could read as a weapon on an X-ray, like floggers, whips, restraints, handcuffs (if that's your thing, no judgment), belongs in your checked bag, where any inspection happens privately, away from the security-line audience.
Batteries flip the equation. The FAA bans spare lithium batteries from checked luggage, and devices with built-in rechargeable batteries, which is nearly every modern vibrator, are safest in your carry-on, powered off. So: the leather goes below, the technology flies with you.
Bring Travel-Friendly Toys
Pack light, and yes, that applies to your toys. This may be the only time in human history when everyone agrees that smaller is better. Bullet vibrators, love eggs, and mini massagers are compact, quiet, and unremarkable on a scanner. Even better are toys designed for discretion, like vibrators disguised as lipstick, jewelry, even lemons. Skip anything that could be mistaken for a weapon and choose silicone over metal. Metal raises questions. Silicone minds its own business.
Prevent Surprise Buzzing: Batteries Matter
There's nothing quite like your bag buzzing its way down the conveyor belt while every head in line turns toward you. If your toy takes batteries, remove them before packing. If it's rechargeable, run the battery down before you leave which means using it every night the week before your trip. A sacrifice, I know. Consider it your pre-flight checklist. (Just don't forget the charger.) Some toys even come with travel locks that prevent accidental power-ons; check your manual. The frequent flyers among us swear by them.
Pack Like a Pro: Bag It
Pack your toys in a clear plastic bag and place it on top of your clothes. If your suitcase gets searched, the agent sees immediately what they're dealing with. No digging through your unmentionables to find the mystery item on the screen. It's more hygienic, too: your vibrator never touches the bottom of your shoes, and the TSA screener never has to lay hands on it. You can even label the bag. "Wellness" if you're shy. "Massagers" if you're diplomatic. "Sex Toys" if you're 70 and have officially aged out of caring what strangers think.
Lube Is a Liquid
Bring your lube. Absolutely. But remember it counts as a liquid, just like your shampoo and hair gel. Carry-on bottles of lube and toy cleaner must be 3.4 ounces (100 ml) or less and go in your quart-sized clear plastic bag with your other liquids. Nothing says “vacation buzzkill” like having your favorite lube tossed into the TSA trash bin because you forgot it’s considered a liquid. Don’t let your foreplay become collateral damage. Larger bottles belong in checked luggage. Better yet, pack single-use lube packets and toy-cleaning wipes: no spills, no measuring, no explaining.
Stay Calm, Cool, and Collected
TSA officers screen thousands of bags a day. Trust me, your vibrator isn’t the weirdest thing they’ve seen before lunch. They’ve seen it all. Your bullet vibrator will not be the most interesting thing in that bin today. It may not crack the top ten. What officers are trained to notice is nervous behavior. Sweating through your shirt, clutching your bag to your chest, looking stricken: that gets attention. You're doing nothing wrong or even unusual. The worst realistic outcome is a bag search, and thanks to your clearly labeled pouch sitting right on top, it's over in a jiffy. Instead of embarrassment, try pride. You're a sexually active older adult who packs like a professional.
International Travel: Know Before You Go
Traveling abroad? Research your destination's laws before you pack a bag full of toys. Some countries are very enthusiastic about tourism…just not your vibrator. In India, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, the Maldives, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates, sex toys are heavily restricted or outright illegal, and possession can mean confiscation, fines, or genuine legal trouble. Laws and enforcement change, so always check current guidance for your specific destination before traveling. When in doubt, leave it at home and improvise creatively when you arrive.
More Travel Tips
Don't want to pack toys and lube at all? Buy what you need at your destination or ship yourself a package so it's waiting when you arrive. Most cities, at home and abroad, have drugstores or adult shops. One delightful exception: Alabama, where selling sex toys is illegal but possessing them is perfectly fine. Local shops work around this with a medical-purpose loophole. Some have customers sign a questionnaire attesting that their sex life would suffer without the product. Imagine the story you can tell your friends: you, at 70, signing a sworn statement in Alabama to buy a vibrator. (Or just order from Amazon like everyone else.) Travel really does lead to new adventures.
Travel on a Cruise
Cruises are made for romance and sexual adventure: no chores, fewer and skimpier clothes, warm tropical air, and freely flowing drinks. Paradise, with a buffet. Just remember that unlimited margaritas don’t always lead to unlimited good decisions. But, just like flying, cruising has rules.
What to Pack
Most cruise lines don't mind personal sex toys in your checked bag, as long as nothing is a fire hazard. What you absolutely should not bring: metal or fuzzy handcuffs, zip ties, or any bondage gear that looks vaguely weapon-like on an X-ray. It will be confiscated at embarkation. And if your bag trips an alarm, say your vibrator wakes up mid-scan, you may be invited to the ship's security area, affectionately known as the Naughty Room. It sounds exciting. It isn’t. It’s mostly fluorescent lighting and security personnel. Stay cool, calm, and cooperative. Better yet, get creative and pack scarves instead: elegant, versatile, and never once confiscated as a weapon. Very Grace Kelly of you.
Your cruise packing mantra: bring it with you. Ship sundry and gift shops don't sell sex toys or lube, so pack enough lube to last the whole voyage. And don't substitute the Vaseline or baby oil from the gift shop. Oil-based products degrade condoms, damage silicone toys, and trap bacteria exactly where you don't want it. The same goes for scented aloe lotions. Their fragrances, alcohol, and oils can disrupt the vaginal microbiome and invite a yeast infection. Not exactly the vacation souvenir you were hoping to bring home. The ships do sell condoms, and if you're having sex with someone whose history you don't know (cruises are famously friendly), use one. STI rates among older adults have been climbing for years. Pack protection right next to the sunscreen.
Sex on the Balcony: Tempting, but No
The sunset, the sea air, the gentle rocking of the ship...your balcony practically begs for it. Resist. Sex in public or semi-public spaces violates cruise line policy and, depending on the port, local laws against lewd or indecent behavior. Think you won't get caught? Those dividers between balconies don't reach floor to ceiling, your neighbors are two feet away, security cameras cover far more of the ship's exterior than you'd guess, and most cruises are family friendly. A child could wander past at any moment. You don’t want your romantic sunset moment to become tomorrow’s security training video. Courtesy applies indoors, too: cabin walls are thin, and your neighbors paid for an ocean view, not a soundtrack.
Cross the line and you could be confined to your cabin or put off the ship at the next port. And balcony acrobatics at sea carry one more risk we'll just say out loud: Gravity has no respect for romance. Keep both feet on the deck. You're adventurous, not indestructible. Take it inside, where the worst that can happen is falling off the bed.
Dog Days of Summer Reminders
Summer vacations may not look like they did when you were twenty, but they still can be every bit as adventurous. Sometimes even more so.
Whether you’re heading to Paris, Alaska, the Caribbean, or just enjoying a staycation in your own backyard, this summer can be an exploration in pleasure and passion.
Pack the sunscreen.
Pack the lube and the vaginal moisturizer, because travel dries out more than your skin.
Pack your sense of adventure.
And if TSA happens to discover your vibrator? Smile. You’re simply a well-prepared traveler who plans for all forms of recreation.
Have fun, stay safe, and remember that great vacations create wonderful memories and stories you’ll laugh about for years.
